AFTER TIZIANO ASPETTI (ITALIAN, 1559-1606): A 19TH CENTURY VENETIAN BRONZE FIGURAL DOOR KNOCKER modelled as a central figure of Venus Marina standing on a shell and flanked by a pair of dolphins, each ridden by a winged putto,hanging from the backplate modelled as a bearded mask, 37.5cm high A 17th century door knocker of this design was sold at Sotheby's, 7 July 2006, lot 75. A number of other early casts are known to exist including the cast in Palazzo Venezia, Rome and another in the Royal Ontario Museum, Canada. Although previously described as in the style of Alessandro Vittoria by Wilhelm von Bode this model has generally been attributed to Aspetti.
